Canon A1100 Powershot Review

My Experience with the Canon A1100 Powershot… And How It Relates To Fountains

Read This Information Before You Buy The Canon A100 Powershot

Today, I'm going to review the Canon A1100 Powershot for you. I picked one up while I was on vacation because, well... you'll see. I spent the first week of my vacation using another camera, which worked great until I dropped it in the fountain in front of some museum. I replaced it with this Canon (mostly because it was a brand name that I recognized) for the second week of photos, so there are plenty of pictures to use to compare the performance. First things first, though. Let me tell you about my experience with the camera itself.

In terms of ease of use, I'd have to say that the Canon A1100 Powershot is better. Keep in mind that I've bought and/or used many different digital cameras over the years so I know their basic operation. A person not so experienced might have a little trouble understanding the buttons on the back of the camera. Each button has two functions: one for shooting and the other for viewing pictures. Unfortunately, the manual doesn't do a very good job of explaining how these buttons are uesd. Despite this fact, the Powershot does have some great features.

Here's some of the benefits we discovered -

  • Pre-Configured Shutter Settings – The Canon A1100 Powershot gets a point in my review thanks to the pre-configured shutter settings. If you have a little bit of knowledge about cameras and photography you can easily adjust shutter speeds and lighting to any customized setting you want. But if you're not after a Pulitzer Prize and just want to take pictures for the fun of it, then you can use the Automatic settings. The Canon takes over and makes all those decisions for you. The camera can automatically adjust itself according to the available light for each picture you take. Every picture comes out perfect (almost) every time.
  • Picture Quality - The Canon A1100 Powershot gets another point for the quality of the pictures. As I write this review, I'm comparing my pictures from both cameras side by side. Hands down, the Canon photos are much more sharp and clear, the colors are more vibrant and realistic, and there's very little blur in the pictures that had movement in the background. Even after enlarging a couple pictures to 8 X 10 size they're almost as sharp as the originals.
  • Compact Size – Everything these days seems to be getting smaller and smaller and the Powershot is no exception. If my first camera had been this small I might not have lost it in the fountain because it would have been in my jacket pocket and not in my hand. Oh, well, hindsight's twenty-twenty. The Powershot is feather light and although it's small it's still easy and comfortable to hold while using the buttons and lining up your pictures.

As a side note, while I was using the Canon A1100 Powershot it never occurred to me that it ran on regular alkaline batteries – that is, until my batteries died. To me, this is actually a plus because as long as you carry extra batteries, either alkaline or rechargeable NiMH batteries, you'll never be without your camera.

So all in all I'd say the Canon A1100 Powershot gets a favorable review and two enthusiastic thumbs up from this (casual) photographer. Just remember: always carry extra batteries. And keep your camera zipped securely in your jacket pocket whenever you visit a fountain.
